Troubleshooting hearing aid problems
There can be a number of reasons your hearing aids are acting up, from a bad battery to microphone or receiver clogs. Many of these minor issues can be addressed through a few simple steps.
- Decreased or distorted sound: If you notice lower sound volumes, first check the controls and settings on your hearing aid to ensure you didn’t accidentally bump or switch these programs. If these are all correctly calibrated, check to see if any earwax or debris is clogging ports or microphones. Perform a thorough cleaning if you notice any kind of impaction. Finally, try changing the batteries in your device to see if the volume is restored.
- Feedback or whistling: First, remove and reinsert your device per the instructions received from your audiologist. Improper insertion can cause a poor fit, which enables wind to enter the ear canal and impact sound. If you’re sure the hearing aid is properly inserted, try checking for any debris or loose earwax and then put in a fresh battery.
- No power: Before panicking, first check to make sure you have your device switched into the “on” position and the volume is at the correct level. While this sounds simple, it’s easy to accidentally change settings or switch your unit off if you’re not used to handling hearing aids. Next, try removing the old battery and replacing with a new one, making sure to put them in the correct way.
